The NEXT Wave festival is back for 2010 and in full swing. Last weekend I went to Bennett Miller's brilliant 'Dachshund UN' outside the Melbourne Museum.
"Dachshund U.N. is both a joyful and chaotic experiment, and a meditation on the utopian aspirations of the Commission on Human Rights, and our capacity as humans to imagine and achieve a universal system of justice. Audiences are invited to these exclusive live viewings of the operations of the Dachshund U.N., where 47 specially recruited dachshunds will engage in rigorous debate."
Supporters: Department of Culture and the Arts – Western Australia, Australia Council for the Arts, Keir Foundation, Melbourne Museum
Commissioned and developed by Next Wave through Kickstart 2009. Partnered by Melbourne Museum.
Dachshund UN will be back for the next two Saturdays at 2pm, Melbourne Museum, Nicholson Street, Carlton Gardens, Carlton.
Here's what we said about the festival in our Artnotes column for the May issue of Art Monthly magazine:
No Risk Too Great
"How can we act boldly and imaginatively, in art and in life?" asks Next Wave in the program of the 2010 Festival. Artistic Director Jeff Kahn describes the festival's overarching theme as, 'exploring the role of risk in a risk-averse culture. Just what does 'risk' actually mean in these volatile times?' The risk-taking program showcases work by solo artists, collectives and an unprecedented number of special commissions and curated keynote projects. It will feature around 50 events and projects by Australia's best young emerging artist. Structural Integrity at North Melbourne's Meat Market building will explore new work from ARIs around Australia alongside those from 5 Asian countries. The Sports Club Project, two multi-art events will be held at the George Knott athletic Field and the MCG. The 2010 festival will also include a dance program for the first time, an all-night video marathon at Federation Square, and new performance works at Shed 4 in Docklands, at ACMI, under Fed Square and at the Arts Centre. From 13 May - 30 May.
